The Bruce Schwartz (Written by his friend, Tom Blakely) Bruce Schwartz was a unique man. His flashy dress, his hearty greeting, his buoyant optimism, his heartfelt patriotism - all were part of who he was. He knew that friendship worked both ways and he had a lot of friends. There was no such thing as a casual relationship with Bruce. Once you were in his world, it was total immersion. Patron of the arts, loving father, business man, Bruce lived life to the fullest. But his friends knew that it was the personal touches that made the most lasting impressions. Everyone who knew him had a story, often involving food. Bruce loved to eat but wouldn't (or couldn't) cook. The easiest way to ensure his undying gratitude was to make him a meal, and let him take the leftovers home. You were rewarded from then on with his praise for the wonderful soup, the amazing chicken or the fabulous pie you had made for him - and insisted that he take home. But giving to Bruce never seemed like a burden, and it wasn't that he seemed needy, which he certainly wasn't. You had shared some of your life with him, and he truly appreciated that. He knew, and made sure that you knew, that you had given from your heart. Many years ago I was lucky enough to have him see something in me. Since then, he let me know that I was special to him, as he was special to me. It's hard to imagine him not being here anymore. My one thought is: can I be to those around me what Bruce was to me? Big shoes to fill, now sadly empty. |
